The Parliament’s Committee on National Security Services (241 Committee) has asked to investigate the death of Zakiyya Moosa, who was found dead with injuries in Noonu Atoll Holhudhoo last year.

The matter was submitted to the committee by opposition Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) North Galolhu MP Mohamed Ibrahim (Kudu).

In a letter to Parliament Speaker Abdul Raheem Abdulla, MP Mohamed expressed concerns over police investigation, stating that it was not being conducted properly.

The letter highlighted that despite Zakiyya’s body bearing injuries, police had concluded that there was no evidence of third-party involvement.

Additionally, the police have not released sufficient information about the case, raising concerns about the lack of progress in the investigation.

MP Mohamed further noted that a prolonged delay in determining the cause of death has led to fears that those responsible may not be brought to justice.

Residents of Holhudhoo have also voiced frustration over the authorities' handling of the case, stating that the lack of attention has left the island in a state of unrest.

During yesterday’s parliament session, an emergency motion regarding the case was submitted but was not accepted for debate.

Many Holhudhoo residents suspect Zakiyya’s husband was involved in her death and have called for his arrest. In response to the growing public outcry, Minister of Homeland Security and Technology Ali Ihusan and Police Commissioner Ali Shujau visited the island to meet with the community.

Minister Ihusan acknowledged that it was a mistake for the police to proceed with Zakiyya’s burial without conducting an autopsy.
