Minister of Health Ahmed Naseem has stated that fifty percent of the Maldives population suffering from diabetes are still undiagnosed.

Speaking at the health sector research book launching ceremony, minister Naseem said a lot of work needs to be done to improve public health.

While more than half of those who have diabetes have not been properly diagnosed with the disease, Naseem said that most people come to know they have diabetes after their health deteriorates.

"More than half of people in the Maldives who have not been diagnosed with diabetes are not aware of their condition. They come to know when they get a health check after dizzy spells or fainting'' said the Minister.

He claimed that people do not follow a healthy diet and stressed on the significance of not eating right before bedtime, avoiding sleeping late and cutting back on salt and sugar consumption.

The Ministry of Health has made the decision to start a program this year to enhance public health, going from door to door, inspecting their lifestyle and offering healthy recommendations.

He said that he wanted to look into the situation of the people with compassion, noting that once the work is completed simultaneously in all islands, the results will be seen next year.

Health research carried out between 2018 and 2021 are included in the book "Compendium of Health Research in Maldives" which was launched on October 10, containing more than 30 studies including disease treatment and prevention, as well as Covid research conducted over the last two years.

Minister Naseem has asked that research be used to help further develop the health sector.
