The government of India granted MVR 8 million to Maldives, to procure and install outdoor fitness equipment in 61 islands across the archipelago, revealed Ministry of Foreign Affairs on Thursday.

According to the foreign ministry, the project aims to promote healthy lifestyles and combat non-communicable diseases in Maldives.

The ministry further noted that the project was in support of President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih's electoral pledge to promote healthy and active lifestyles.

The Indian government provided the grant assistance through the USD 6.9 million (MVR 100 million) granted to Maldives during the visit of Indian Minister of External Affairs Sushma Swaraj in March 2019. The aim of the grant assistance is to conduct high-impact socio-economic development projects across the country.

In addition to the MVR 8 million, India is also providing MVR 7.7 million to purchase and deliver ambulances across Maldives.

Moreover, the Maldivian government recently announced a number of other projects to be undertaken through the Indian grant assistance, including the development of an International Convention Centre in the north, funding of projects at the Police Academy's Specialised Training School, and to establish emergency medical services and construct classrooms in some islands.
