Housing Development Corporation has yesterday cleaned an accommodation block housing expatriates.
A statement released by HDC said that it had come to notice that food preparations were being conducted in a temporary shelter that contravened safety standards. They said that they had spoken with the contractor, brought this to a halt, and cleaned the premises.
Maldives Immigration later released a statement informing that during a search of these premises, two expatriates without a valid visa had been identified, and has since been taken into detention.
They further said that they had brought it to the attention of related authorities that expatriates were living and preparing food on the premises without proper cleanliness and against social standards.
The government is currently undertaking efforts to identify expatriates living and working in the country illegally, and to deport such persons. Out of this, over 2000 expatriates have been deported to date.
