Olympus Cafe's ceiling, affixed by cafe' managers collapses last night after termite infestation

The ceiling of the cafe' located inside Olympus, the oldest and biggest cinema located in the Maldivian Capital, Male' City has collapsed last night due to termites. No one was injured in the incident and the area has now been cleared of rubble.

The ceiling of the cafe' located inside Olympus Cinema, the oldest and largest theatre in the Maldives, situated in the capital, Male' City has collapsed last night.

No one was injured in the incident.

An official of the Ministry of Youth Empowerment, Information and Art, tasked with managing the cinema said to Mihaaru News today that the ceiling of this cafe', operated inside the theatre by independent parties who are leased the premise was built by the party themselves.

"The ceiling was built on their own. After affixing rafters under the sheet above. The place has been allegedly infested with termites since long back. Because of the termites - after termites ate the rafters, the weight fell on its gypsum boards and the ceiling collapsed entirely," said the official.

No other ceilings nor areas inside the cinema had taken any damage, the official affirmed, further assuring that the rubble has been removed and the area now cleared.

This cafe', operated inside the theatre, welcomes both cinema visitors and the general public.

The Olympus Cinema had undergone major renovation and modernization amid Ibrahim Mohamed Solih's administration, with the theatre installed with state-of-the art equipment alongside a larger cafe' and backyard stage for small events. The project was funded by both the State and the 'High Impact Community Development' grant offered by the Indian government.
