Today, Health Protection Agency (HPA) implored people to take special precaution while selling chicken eggs.

In a statement, HPA said that the manner in which eggs are sold, handled and stored is highly likely to pose a risk to food safety.

The agency appealed to the public to avoid buying eggs which have unclean shells, and to buy refrigerated eggs instead.

In addition to this, they also asked to take the following safety measures:

- Avoid eggs with cracks in them

- Do not buy more eggs than needed

- Steer clear of washing eggs (washing it allows germs and chemicals to reach the inside of the eggs)

- Store eggs in the refrigerator to avoid contamination of other food

- Store food prepared using raw eggs at the required temperature and refrain from keeping it out of the refrigerator for more than two hours
