Only four COVID patients in ICU, all unvaccinated

An IGMH doctor said on Sunday evening that there were only four people being treated in the ICU of Hulhumale' Medical Facility (HMF) for COVID-19 and none of them had been vaccinated against the coronavirus.

Dr. Rajib Dey, a doctor of internal medicine, had tweeted this after his rounds at the medical facility said all four in the ICU were on ventilators.

"... They all have one thing in common. None of them are vaccinated," he said.

In the most recent press conference by Health Emergency Operations Center (HEOC), their spokesperson Dr. Nazla Rafeeq had expressed concern over the fact a significant percentage of the eligible population had not received any dose of the vaccines for COVID-19. She had said that inoculation rates were still lower than Health Protection Agency's (HPA) projections.

Maldives had acquired enough vaccines to ensure everyone that is eligible is vaccinated. The government aims to inoculate 90 percent of the population before August ends.

People above the age of 18 are being administered AstraZeneca and Sinopharm vaccine. Children between the ages of 12 and 17 will be given the Pfizer vaccine, the only vaccine that have so far been approved for children.

Over 40,000 students will be inoculated under this program.

So far 343,901 people in Maldives have received the first dose of the vaccine while 295,039 people have been fully vaccinated.
