Minister at the President's Office Mohamed Shifaz, on Friday, inaugurated the Laboratory at the Health Centre in Thakandhoo, Haa Alif Atoll.
Prior to the establishment of the facility, the 934 residents of the island had to travel to nearby Dhidhoo, Haa Alif Atoll or Kulhudhuffushi, Haa Dhaalu Atoll, 20 minutes and 45 minutes by speedboat, respectively.
However, severe weather frequently halts sea travel, making emergency voyages daunting and treacherous.
According to a statement released by the Ministry of Health, Thakandhoo citizens are appreciative of the addition to their healthcare infrastructure.
A total of eight islands now provide laboratory services in Haa Alif Atoll, including Ihavandhoo, Hoarafushi, Baarah, Thuraakunu, Kelaa, Filladhoo and Uligamu.
