Ministry of Communications, Science and Technology on Wednesday stated that arrangements were made for 435 civil servants to work from home as government offices have been closed as a precautionary measure amidst the global COVID-19 pandemic.

According to the ministry, these arrangements were made to ensure that there was no disruption of services despite the nationwide shutdown of government institutions. For this purpose, the ministry has also established an IT taskforce.

The statistics revealed by the ministry show that a total of 470 government employees serving various ministries, requested for an arrangement to work from home.

The ministry noted that this opportunity was provided for almost all public servants.

In addition, they can also access the Government E-letter Management System (GEMS), used to exchange official government documents, from their workstations at home.

The ministry stated that 73 government employees from 43 institutions in capital Malé had access to the system along with staff members from seven schools.

Moreover, 41 people serving a total of 26 council offices, were also granted access to exchange such documents from home.

Communications, Science and Technology Ministry also noted that the IT taskforce is also providing work-from-home solutions for systems specialised by other administrations.

While Maldives is currently under a state of public health emergency, the government has advised the public to maintain 'social distancing' and stay at home to contain the spread of the virus within the community.

Maldives now has 13 confirmed and eight active cases of COVID-19, with five recoveries. So far, only tourists and resort employees have confirmed infections in Maldives with no record of local transmissions within the country. The first Maldivian tested positive for the virus in the United Arab Emirates (UAE).

The World Health Organization has classified the spread of COVID-19 as a global pandemic. The novel coronavirus has infected more than 434,568 and claimed over 19,602 lives around the world. However, out of those infected, more than 111,853 have recovered.
