Salaries of health sector to increase soon: President

President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih has said that the salaries of health sector employees will increase as soon as the difficulties faced in finding qualified teachers and principals is resolved.

Speaking at the opening ceremony of the "Viyavathi" conference held in Laamu atoll Gan, the President stated that after necessary changes are brought about to the education sector, the government's next priority is to bring positive changes to salaries within the health sector. However, the president did not elaborate further in regards to the salary increase.

He said that the positive changes brought to the education system of the islands reflected in the number of students who won this year's High Achievers Award. The President also said that the students of schools in isolated and small islands have achieved outstanding results whilst competing with the rest of the world.

He said that Maldivians living in every island have the good fortune to live a happy life, and that any individual should be paid the right wages for his life's work.

"A minimum wage has been set after a long time. This has improved the income of many people like never before," said President Solih.

Under the new teachers salary framework, which came into effect in May, a diploma level teacher will receive MVR 13,266, and a degree level teacher will receive MVR 19,467. Whereas, a Master's level teacher receives MVR 20,895 under the framework.

Moreover, a principal in rank 1 is to receive MVR 30,610 whereas a principal in rank 2 is paid MVR 33,075 per month as salary.
