The Maldives Police Service has begun investigating a potential homicide in Nolhivaram in Haa Dhaalu atoll.
The police confirmed that a report was filed on Saturday afternoon, at around 12:30 p.m., alleging that a 28-year-old woman was murdered on the island.
As soon as the report was filed, police officers went to the scene, and the woman was taken to the Nolhivaram Health Centre.
She was already dead when she was taken to the health centre, the police stated.
According to residents of the island, there are many suspicious circumstances surrounding the woman’s death. They reported hearing a heated argument between the woman and her husband earlier in the day. Shortly before her body was discovered, the man rented a speedboat and fled the island, a local of the island told Mihaaru news.
He reportedly travelled to nearby Kulhudhuffushi City.
"[The victim’s husband] worked outside the island before. He only moved back two years ago. There are always rumours on the island about how they constantly argue," said the source.
The woman is a native of Nolhivaram, while her husband is from Fenfushi, in the same atoll. They have three children together.
A member of the Nolhivaram Island Council told Mihaaru news that there were no signs of foul play immediately evident on the woman’s body. However, other sources from the island claim that there were strangulation marks on her neck.
None of the speculation has been confirmed yet.
Meanwhile, a team from the Kulhudhuffushi police station has also been deployed to Nolhivaram to investigate the matter further.
The police have made no official comments regarding the incident yet.
