President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih announced that the Commission of National Inquiry (CoNI) investigation report on the February 7, 2012, government change has gone missing. He added that the matter has been reported to the Maldives Police Service for investigation.

President Solih, who is seeking re-election this year, made these remarks during a campaign rally in Haa Dhaalu atoll Neykurendhoo. President Solih and his campaign team are currently touring the upper-northern atoll as part of his campaign.

At the rally, president Solih revealed that the investigation report of CoNI which was agreed to be filed for 25 years post the inquiry, had gone missing.

“Isn’t this a significant secret of the government? But it has gone missing today. We need to investigate to find the culpable parties, and we have requested Maldives Police to investigate this,” President Solih said.

“These are grave and concerning matters which we need to think about regarding the candidates contending.”

In the past, there have been allegations about the report being "discarded". Following which, a former president and two of their cabinet ministers are expected to be summoned by the police for questioning.

The commission was formed to thoroughly investigate all the aspects that led to the eventual downfall of Mohamed Nasheed’s government in 2012. The report concluded that the government's removal occurred within the parameters of the Maldives Constitution and law.

Following the inquiry, former President Mohamed Waheed, who took over as president after Nasheed's resignation, said on August 30, 2012, that Nasheed's presidency met a lawful end and was not usurped illegally.
