The Maldives Tourism Development Corporation (MTDC) has contracted Dubai's R.A.W Galadari for the development of a new tourist resort property in the northern atoll of Haa Dhaal.

According to MTDC, the contractor has commenced clean-up and landscaping efforts under the resort development project.

The contractor will commence structural development on the island after receiving approval from Environmental Protection Agency (EPA).

Meanwhile, the Managing Director of MTDC Mr. Thazmeel Abdul Samad confirmed that the resort's master plan has been completed and disclosed to the Ministry of Tourism.

In addition to this, the corporation had prepared an Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) which had since been shared with EPA as well.

Mr. Abdul Samad confirmed that the approval period will consume time due to the unique concept of the resort, however, added that construction works will likely commence within two to three months.

For the development of a new tourist resort in the northern atoll, R.A.W. Galadari entered into a joint-venture agreement with MTDC; which is the first such case for the latter in terms of resort development.

Furthermore, MTDC expects a total of between USD 300 to 400 million will be spent on complete development of the tourist resort.

The joint-venture's Deputy Managing Director Mr. Ahmed Niyaz attested that the island of Naagoshi, which is the venue of the new resort development carried out by R.A.W Galadari, will be one of the largest tourist properties in the country.

Mr. Niyaz, further detailed that the resort will have 835 villas, which translates to 1,670 beds, upon completion. In addition to this, the contractor will develop two tiers of villas; five-star villas and six-star villas in the resort. (MIHAARU)
