Haa Dhaalu Atoll Kumundhoo Council has cancelled the finals of their Futsal Tournament after receiving threats that their offices will be damaged if they proceed with holding the match.
A member of the council said that the tournament which started on October 15 had 10 teams participating in it. According to him, the conflict arose when it came to the finals.
The final match was initially scheduled to be held last Monday. However, the match was interrupted after one of the teams expressed disagreements with the referee. The council then rescheduled the match to Thursday.
However, he alleged that members of one of the teams that are to play in the finals went to the council offices and issued threats.
"When they came to the council and threatened us, we decided to not hold the finals and to discontinue the tournament," he said.
A post on Kumundhoo Council's facebook page states that threats of violence against the council offices and its staff had been received.
"This council does not wish to compromise peace in the island, and so have decided to discontinue Futsal Challenge 2023. We apologize for this to all sports lovers in the island," the post reads.
