Commissioner of Sports Mohamed Tholal stated yesterday that discrimination in athlete selection for national teams, as well in appointing officials, also counts as corruption.

He emphasized that corruption is not only when there is money involved, and called for wider acceptance that discrimination in appointments and selection are also acts which fall under corruption.

Tholal made these comments while speaking at a press conference at the President's Office yesterday, which the Minister of Sports, Fitness and Recreation Abdulla Rafiu also participated in.

He stated that work is ongoing to work collaboratively with associations to amend selection criteria, ethics policies, and other regulations in such a manner that would cease to allow acts of corruption.

Tholal said that much has been done this year to tackle issues of corruption within sports associations, especially highlighting the 'PACHAS' initiative undertaken by the Sports Ministry and the Anti Corruption Commission.

PACHAS - Promoting Anti-Corruption, Honesty and Accountability in Sports, is an initiative aiming to tackle possible corruption and promote integrity in the field of sports.
