Over 11,000 connections through the open access network of Housing Development Corporation (HDC) have been established, reports the company.

HDC marked the one year anniversary of the launch of it's open access network on October 6, since service commenced.

Through this network, IPTV and internet service providers facilitate their services within the same grid. It is also the largest open access network in the country.

HDC launched the open access network as part of its larger initiative to transform Hulhumale' into a "smart city". Meanwhile, the company affirms that it continues expanding upon the existing digital infrastructure to ensure their smart city concept becomes holistically realized.

HDC established corporate partnerships with the biggest internet service providers in the country which include Dhiraagu, Ooredoo, ROL and MediaNet. These companies integrated their respective services into the same grid to facilitate for Hulhumale' Phase II residents.

With each expansion of housing and neighborhood development at the satellite town, HDC confirms their open access network will respectively expand. The corporation claims they were working on expanding "smart-com" services to zones three and five of Phase II.

The "smart-com" initiative envisions connecting the entire island through digital infrastructure.

Meanwhile, HDC launched a special "Imagining a Smart City" art competition for children - which is a commemorative activity for smart-com's anniversary. The corporation will launch a series of field trips for teenagers to create stronger awareness for technological innovation and their importance.

HDC will host an inclusive event dubbed "Digital Inclusivity" that expands upon this objective.
