Housing Development Corporation (HDC) announced the initiation of a co-living housing project to address the difficulties faced by the population of the greater Male' region.

The cooperation has publicised a notice seeking contractors to develop and manage a 14-storey residential building in Phase Two of reclaimed suburb Hulhumale.

With an allocation of approximately 17,000 square feet, the co-living facility will be equipped with a gym, laundromat, barbeque area and convenience stores.

Numerous accommodation types including two shared rooms per floor, rooms for daily rent and shareable single rooms will be offered under the co-living initiative.

In a statement issued on December 23, HDC disclosed the findings of a study conducted on the demand for co-living housing.

According to the Corporation, 54 percent of the survey participants expressed interest in the co-living programme, stating that they would be prepared to seek accommodation at such a facility for a minimum of one year.

Additionally, it was found that young salaried workers and students spent an average of MVR 5,000 per month to cover only accommodation expenses.

Highlighting the increasing popularity of co-living housing across the world, HDC expressed confidence that the project would offer convenient and affordable housing options for a portion of the population.
