Maldives delivered seven statements and called on to the global audience to support SIDS better in the years to come. Maldives said its goals for the SIDS conference were all achieved.
Maldives was able to achieve the goals it set at the ongoing Small Island Developing States (SIDS) Forum, the government said today.
The forum, which is held once in every 10 years was held in Antigua and Barbuda this year, and the Maldives' delegation was led by President Dr Mohamed Muizzu, who gave several speeches and hosted sideline meetings with various stakeholders.
During a special press conference held by the President's Office to provide media with further information about the event, Chief Spokesperson of the President's Office Heena Waleed declared the SIDS forum to be very successful.
She said that while the SIDS main outcome document is being agreed upon, the government is very hopeful that everything Maldives lobbied for would be endorsed, including international funding, and areas of focus for financial agencies when providing financial support for SIDS.
"The important goals which Maldives wanted to achieve [out of the SIDS forum] has been achieved," said Heena.
She also added that Maldives has delivered a total of seven statements as of now and that President Dr Mohamed Muizzu's speeches focused on opening doors for financial aid and the importance of building a participative society when it comes to environmental causes, as well as the importance of businesses in SIDS collaborating to promote inclusivity.
The president's office previously said that President Dr Mohamed Muizzu held discussions on the outcomes of the SIDS forums as well as on improving the resources and self sufficiency of States.
He also proposed three solutions for facilitating necessary financing for the development of small island nations like the Maldives, with the first being a call to restructure the global financial system. The second suggestion was to increase financing provided to SIDS by big developed countries in collaboration with Multilateral Development Banks (MDBs) and the private sector. Lastly, President Dr Muizzu called onto SIDS to expand its view further.
