Police have announced that parking violation stickers will not be imposed until parking buildings are established.
The new Commissioner of Police (CP), Ali Shujau, in his first interview with a media outlet, informed 'Mihaaru News' on Sunday that authorities are working on a comprehensive solution to the traffic problem in the Malé area. He said that if enforcement is strengthened across all government institutions, a robust solution to the parking issue will be implemented.
CP Shujau stated that it is not acceptable in any way to fine the public by imposing stickers on vehicles.
He stated that issuing violation stickers and towing vehicles will not take place until parking buildings are constructed.
"Issuing stickers, imposing fines, and towing vehicles is not the solution for the traffic congestion issue in Malé City. I believe the solution is that we have better policies, more parking spaces, disciplined drivers, and everyone working towards the safety of others,” the CP said.
"Our intention is not to issue stickers until a parking system is developed. The government is working very hard... We are following this practice now, for example, if a vehicle is parked in a way that causes inconveniences, the police will contact the owner and ask them to remove the vehicle."
However, it is challenging, as large vehicles are parked near green zones and schools, and the police will work in this regard. Instead of towing the vehicle, the police contact the owner and ask them to remove the vehicle as soon as possible.
"We don't intend to impose any stickers or fines with the roads in Malé as they are now. However, we request the people to cooperate with the police and remove the vehicles parked in such a way that causes public inconveniences," the Commissioner said.
