The parliament debated on a bill to amend the Higher Education Act.
The parliament should first revise the requirements of becoming a parliament member if they are sincere about developing and facilitating higher education opportunities in Maldives, said MP of South Galolhu constituency and minority party Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) member Meekail Ahmed Naseem today.
Speaking on the Higher Education Act amendment, Meekail said that youth who make big sacrifices to receive higher education are forced to work behind political figures with no educational backgrounds.
"If this parliament has true intentions in this matter, the first thing that should be done is to have some form of qualification when applying to become a member," he said.
Meekail went on to stress that such a matter which concerns the future of the country's youth should start from the parliament.
He also criticised the government, claiming that it is failing to provide necessary funds for students who are studying abroad. He also pointed out that new political appointees are being hired everyday, while the government claims to cut expenses.
The amendment to Higher Education Act discussed today calls to reduce the conditions of a college obtaining a university title. According to the amendment, a college must be run for 15 consecutive years and meet several other requirements before becoming a university.
