Ministry of Construction and Infrastructure Dr. Abdulla Muththalib said on Thursday that when the current administration came into power, 46 projects that had been awarded to Maldives Transport and Contracting Company (MTCC) had been halted, but they have resumed work on 14 of these projects so far.

This was a response to statements made by former President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih last week during the campaign rallies of MDP mayoral candidate Adam Azim, accusing the current government of halting some of their ongoing projects.

Muththalib said that though 98 projects were mobilised or equipment had been procured to start the project, the previous government had not proceeded with these projects.

“Due to not receiving fuel and for other reasons these projects were stalled. When we came into office MTCC is in debt for MVR 55 million to FSM,” he said

He said 18 projects awarded to Road Development Corporation (RDC), a company set up by the government to construct roads, were also stalled.

“However, we have started those 18 projects now. The President wants to start the projects like these that have been halted within the next three months. Therefore, we are starting projects under this [direction].”
