State Electric Company (STELCO) secured two prizes this year at the Asia’s Best Employer Branding Awards 2020.

The state-owned company received the 'Dream Companies to Work for Award', while STELCO's Managing Director Hassan Mughnee was named as the 'Emerging Leader of the Year'.

STELCO attributed their success at the awards to the implementation of measures intended to promote employee satisfaction and advancement, in accordance with government recommendations.

Under STELCO's current employment policies, a six-month period is allotted for maternity leave as well as a daily two-hour break for upon return. Notably, if any of the company's employees pass away while under contract, STELCO offers financial assistance to any of the individual's children that are minors, until they reach the legal age of 18.

Additionally, the company noted its endeavours to secure housing for its employees, facilitate Haj and Umrah pilgrimage, as well as sports activities in order to promote physical wellbeing. STELCO also stated that its inclusive recruitment policy enabled individuals with special needs to join the workforce.

Initiatives to strengthen internal governance, overall improvements in performance, safety and security measures implemented due to the COVID-19 pandemic as well as the Greenlight Project which incentivises solar power usage were also highlighted.

Furthermore, STELCO stressed on the strength of its corporate social responsibility policies, noting that the company's services provided a direct link to the public. STELCO has served to generate, distribute and supply electricity across Maldives since it was founded over 70 years ago.

While Mughnee is the first Maldivian to have received an award at Asia’s Best Employer Branding Awards, STELCO credited the achievement to the managing director's leadership policies with regard to staff as well as efforts to increase the company's relationship with customers. These key policies and decisions include the installation of smart metres, the introduction of a SCADA system to address electricity supply disruptions, and the launching of an interconnection project to create a nationwide electrical system.

Organised by the World HRD Congress and the Employer Branding Institute, Asia’s Best Employer Brand Awards was initially held in 2010 at Singapore's Suntec City. All proceedings in 2020 were held virtually due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
