In an announcement issued yesterday, Immigration said that they will be conducting inspections of accommodation quarters to identify where expatriates in the country illegally may be living, and to identify places in conditions that pose public safety risks.
Immigration announced that action will be taken against landlords who have rented such unsafe premises to expatriates, as well as those who provide accommodation to expatriates living illegally in the country.
Under this operation, three houses in Male' was checked, with thirteen expatriates identified as living illegally in the country being taken into detention. Immigration said that all expatriate accommodation locations in Male' would be searched under this operation.
Immigration has started this operation just days after a building housing a cafe' and accommodation for expatriates caught fire, resulting in the building being damaged beyond use and adjacent buildings also being affected. It has been reported that the building where the fire occurred, which is a three storey structure with wooden decks and corrugated metal sheet walls, housed close to fifty expatriates.
