The State has appealed at the High Court a case where a person charged with sexually abusing his grandchild has been released from detention.

The man was arrested in Thaa Atoll Veymandoo on charges of sexually abusing his grandchild. He was placed under remand in custody until the end of his trial. However, the island's court later released him from detention, although the original trial is still proceeding in the same court.

The man was released from detention last week. Subsequently, the Prosecutor General's Office appealed the ruling at the High Court. It is so far unclear whether the High Court has accepted the appeal case.

The charges against the man indicate multiple offences of abuse over a prolonged period of time.

Recently, in another similar case, the High Court has revoked a Criminal Court ruling to release another individual charged with child sexual abuse.
