The streetscaping project of Male' City is introducing tactile paving on the roads of the capital.
Undertaken by Male' City Council and Road Development Corporation (RDC), the streetscaping includes the placement of braille blocks, measuring a foot in width, on pavements as an aid to the visually impaired.
Till date, RDC has completed revamping the street 'Kan'baa Aisaa Hingun'. According to the city council, other roads connected to Kan'baa Aisaa Hingun, which are to be renovated under the project, will feature tactile paving as well.
The development marks a step forward in making the capital city, characterised by congestion and rough brick roads, more friendly for persons living with disabilities.
Previously during the former administration, the renovation of Male's main road 'Majeedhee Magu' saw the inclusion of dropped kerbs for persons using wheelchairs. The feature has since been included in the renovation of pavements during the tarring of Male's ring road.
The Male' City Scaping Project worth MVR 462 million was awarded to RDC in late January this year. It entails the renovation of 18 kilometres of roadway and pavement on 416 roads, in addition to the development of 21 new parking spaces.
RDC is set to develop four types of roads, including arterial, city, secondary and neighbourhood pedestrian roads. Both RDC and the city council assured that the streetscaping project would solve the long persistent flooding issue in Male’ City.
