Maldives Transport and Contracting Company (MTCC) has been contracted with the development of Alifu Dhaalu atoll Omadhoo harbour.

In a ceremony held yesterday, MTCC CEO Adam Azim signed the agreement on behalf of the company, while Director General of Infrastructure Fathimath Shaana Farooq signed the agreement for the the Ministry of National Planning, Housing, and Infrastructure.

According to MTCC, the work scope of the project consists of harbor basin dredging operations of 49,765 cubic meters, channel dredging operations of 12,105 cubic meters and construction of a 398 meter breakwater alongside the construction of 364.10 meter quay wall and 208 meter revetment.

The project will also include paving an area of 1,647.11 square meters and installation of canal lights and harbour lights.

The construction of the harbour will start after an Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) is conducted, the company said.

The project, which costs MVR 66.96 million from the state budget, is expected to be completed in 630 days.

A large number of vessels are docked at Omadhoo harbour. If a large vessel enters the harbour, there is no space to approach the quay wall, MTCC said. According to the company, the harbour has been badly damaged and needs repairs.

The damage to the harbour included the outer canal completely destroyed and the quay wall submerged in various places. The lack of a ramp for large vessels to approach the harbour of Omadhoo has also caused many difficulties.

Omadhoo has a population of 853 people. The island has 13 guest houses and eight fishing vessels.
