A power plant transformer in Addu atoll has been relocated to Gnaviyani Atoll Fuvahmulah due to two wards of the island facing a power outage as a result of the damage incurred by a transformer in the Fuvahmulah power house.

While the island is facing issues with its electricity due to a damaged generator, this recent power outage was due to a broken transformer that ceased electricity supply to two wards; Miskihmagu and Maadhadu.

Speaking to Mihaaru News, the Managing Director of Fenaka, Muaz Mohamed Rasheed, said that electricity was restored to the discontinued wards at midnight last night.

Despite temporarily resolving the issue with the aid from Addu, a permanent solution for Fuvahmulah's existing electricity shortage has still not been found.

Fenaka had attempted to transfer the generator from Gaaf Dhaal atoll Gadhdhoo to Fuvahmulah to resolve this issue; however, the residents were uncooperative and protested against Fenaka’s decision.

A Council Member had said that Fuvahmulah is currently experiencing electricity interruptions every day.

"The transformer brought from Addu yesterday only solved the problem temporarily. Electricity interruptions that have been happening prior to this still have not been resolved. Each day, electricity is cut off," he said.

Due to the damage to an 800-kilowatt generator, electricity interruptions at scheduled time intervals during times when the demand is high have been continuing since the beginning of last month. Fenaka has been trying to transfer the generator in Gadhdhoo to Fuvahmulah since then.

However, the residents have been refusing the removal of the generator from their island.

Gadhdhoo Council has said that the 800-kilowatt generator, which Fenaka is attempting to remove, was brought to the island to resolve electricity problems and has remained uninstalled to this day. They stated that the generator cannot be transferred to another island without solving Gadhdhoo’s electricity problem.

Fuvahmulah is currently experiencing power interruptions at scheduled intervals in designated areas of the island as a precaution to the possibility of the entire island facing electricity failure as a result of the present generators taking too big of a toll.

Fenaka has said that they are working on resolving the electricity issue in Fuvahmulah as soon as possible.
