The "Maldives Ocean Hackathon," which is the largest hackathon ever hosted in the Maldives, has been officially launched and is now open for participation.

The hackathon was initiated as part of the 'Digital Maldives for Adaptation, Decentralization, and Diversification' project, overseen by the Ministry of Climate Change and Technology and funded by the World Bank.

The hackathon offers a prize of USD 10,000. It will run continuously for 48 hours and will be attended by teams consisting of three to five members. Only 10 teams will have the opportunity to participate in the hackathon.

During the launch of 'The Maldives Ocean Hackathon,' Minister for Environment, Climate Change, and Technology, Aiminath Shauna, stressed the importance of early detection of climate change impacts in vulnerable countries like the Maldives. She emphasized the necessity for regularly recorded and well-collected data to aid policymakers, acknowledging the existing challenges in achieving this goal.

Minister Shauna said that digital technology is the key to addressing the challenges of protecting the environment. She highlighted that the hackathon marks the beginning of success of efforts made over the past two years to integrate climate change and technology under one roof.

'The Maldives Ocean Hackathon' is scheduled to take place from October 15 to 17. Registration for the hackathon will remain open until the end of September. Interested participants can register through the 'Ocean Hack' website.
