The island council of Haa Alif atoll Uligan has announced the hosting of its annual mega barbecue on January 2.

Council President Ahmed Muaz Mohamed said that while the usual announcement for the barbecue is made two to three months in advance, this time there has been a slight delay. However, preparations are underway.

While the event is organized at the island level, it attracts participants from across the country. However, many individuals find it challenging to join due to heavy holiday season travel.

Muaz said that the number of fishing teams and the amount of fish to be caught will be determined based on the anticipated number of participants.

"Teams are dispatched each year for the month. Allocation of teams will depend on the arrangement of dhonis, and teams will be assigned based on the various fishing techniques employed," Muaz said.

The required fish for the barbecue are procured on the event day. Boats head out for fishing in the morning, returning in the afternoon with the day's catch. The local community then prepares and cooks various dishes using the harvested fish.

Muaz highlighted that individuals from other islands express interest in participating, ensuring that everyone has an opportunity to partake in the event.

The Uligan barbecue, a long-standing tradition on the island, is recognized as one of the largest barbecues in the country. Serving as a pivotal social gathering, the event features the barbecue of numerous fish, encouraging connections among individuals within the island and its neighboring communities.
