Minister of Environment Dr Hussain Rasheed Hassan on Monday announced plans to invest in areas protected under the current administration.

Speaking in response to an inquiry by Makunudhoo MP Mohamed Raee during a parliament sitting, Dr Hussain disclosed that the investment projects entail infrastructural development which would generate income from protected areas. He stated that the project funds would be included in the state budget for next year.

According to Dr Hussain, various infrastructures would be developed in protected areas of Haa Alif and Haa Dhaalu Atolls, including visitor centres and roads to ensure the full protection of the designated areas.

He added that the government was looking to commence the project as soon as possible in the coming year.

President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih had vowed to protect at least one island, reef and mangrove from each atoll, within the first 100 days of his administration. Till date, the government has declared Keylakunu and Neykurendhoo in Haa Dhaalu Atoll, and the mangrove in Baarah, Haa Alif Atoll, as protected.

The atolls of Haa Alif and Haa Dhaalu, which make up Boduthiladhunmathi, are renowned for their rich biodiversity.
