President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has said today that a land reclamation project will be initiated in Haa Alif Vashafaru within this year to address the housing difficulties faced by residents of the island.

The President arrived in Vashafaru this afternoon. His father, Sheikh Hussain Abdul Rahman, was born in Vashafaru.
The President was given a red carpet reception from the island.
Speaking to the residents at a meeting held in the school hall, President Dr Muizzu assured that his government would not discriminate between smaller islands and larger islands. Under this policy, he assured that he would fulfill the needs of Vashafaru as well, which has a population of approximately 500.
Reclamation of land in Vashafaru is among the presidential campaign pledges of the President as well.
The President said today that while the project has been budgeted for this year, it will be expedited depending on the increase in state revenue.
"Especially the land reclamation project, I aim to fulfill that as per your wishes," he said.
Vashafaru Island Council's President Ahmed Mueen said in today's meeting that the council had received 150 applications in response to an opening to apply for 24 plots of land.
