Speaking at a press conference held by the Ministry today, Minister Ihusan explained that the work of responsible agencies were being carried out independently, and highlighted that Maldives Customs Service for example, worked under the Ministry of Defence with National Drug Agency (NDA) operated under Health Ministry.
However, with the three governments brought under the mandate of a single ministry, the fight against drugs has now been made much easier, he said.
Minister Ihusan also said that Maldives Customs and Maldives Police Service are working closely together to reduce the number of drugs being imported and circulated in the local market. Along with this, effort is also being directed in collaboration with NDA to reduce the demand on drugs and treat individuals with substance use disorders as well as provide them with the necessary medical attention, he added.
"The work is being elevated to a new level with [all the work] being done together under one ministry. Bringing the agencies to one roof - this decision of the President - is the best decision to save [ourselves] from drug addiction," Minister Ihusan said.
Also speaking at the press conference, State Minister Lubna Zahir revealed that there are currently 1,240 individuals receiving treatment for substance abuse disorders.
She also highlighted that there is overwhelming demand for treatment, with many on the waitlist. A waitlist assessment is currently underway, she said.
