The new apron of the Hanimadhoo International Airport managed by Regional Airports Company (RACL) has been officially opened for operations on Tuesday.

In inaugurating the apron, the first flight to land there was a Maldivan flight.

RACL said that the apron will be marketed as being dedicated for jet parking facilities.

The company further said that once the airport upgrading project is completed, the area can be utilized as an isolation hub.

RACL Managing Director Ahmed Mubeen said that the work on the apron was conducted separately from the airport upgrading project. It is, instead, an initiative undertaken under the guidance of President Dr Muizzu in a bid to increase the company's revenue, he revealed.

The size of the newly developed apron is 42,000 sqft. It has the capacity for six jets to be parked in it.

As for the airport upgrading project, RACL has previously said that once that endeavour is complete, the airport's runway will be able to accommodate large flights like A320s and Boeing 737s, while the airport terminal will have the capacity to serve 1.3 million passengers.
