Human Rights Commission of the Maldives (HRCM) has begun investigation into cases of house owners locking the water meters and blocking water supply into the household despite regular bill payments.

A statement released by HRCM said that under the Human Rights Commission Act, multiple cases of the water supplier locking the water meter of a household by the owner's request despite regular monthly payments and owners locking the water meter and blocking the service for residents without the knowledge of the water supplier are being lodged at the Commission.

"We declare that the above stated cases are being investigated by the Commission." read the statement.

HRCM stated that some of these cases has since been resolved after negotiating with related institutions and those involved in the case.

The Commission further expressed concerns over the difficulties posed to residents of the involved households including children, elderly and impaired residents due to such instances of interrupted water supply.

HRCM firmly asserted that no rights can be withheld to any extent unless clearly stipulated in the constitution.

The Commission has urged civilians to seek solutions to problems faced amongst themselves or with an institution through the law by submitting the case to the designated agency under the procedures determined for such cases.
