Minister of Housing, Land and Urban Development Dr Ali Haidar Ahmed has said in parliament today that he is still unsure when land plots allocated during former President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih's administration can be issued to recipients.

The Minister cited multiple reasons for the delays.

As one reason, he cited the ongoing work on the ThilaMale' Bridge. Haidar said that the heavy vehicles being driven during the work on the bridge had entirely damaged the property markers that had earlier been placed to demarcate the land plots. As a result, he is unable to say when the land can be properly demarcated again and issued to recipients.

"I have been informed that these works will conclude by September next year," the Minister said.

As a second reason, the Minister said that the previous government had issued land in a way not suited for inhabitation.

Due to this, this administration had recompiled a land use plan for GulhiFalhu, and brought further changes even to this plan after meeting with the GulhiFalhu community, he said. Currently, the land use plan remains to be approved.

"We have to change some of the land plots from GiravaruFalhu to GulhiFalhu. That work is also complete. We have arranged for people chosen through a draw to be allocated land from GulhiFalhu," Haidar set.

Haidar further said that they are negotiating with MTCC to hand over the remaining reclamation work at GulhiFalhu to the company. He said that land can be issued from GulhiFalhu once 85 hectares of land are reclaimed.

The previous government had planned to build a port at GulhiFalhu and to issue land through that. Hence, only a small area has been allocated for residential use.

The current government decided to build the port at Thilafushi instead, with additional area in GulhiFalhu to be reclaimed. This additional space will accommodate those who want to transfer their land plots from GiravaruFalhu to GulhiFalhu.
