The Guatemalan government has conferred the Grand Cross of the Order of Antonio Jose de Irisarri to Abdulla Shahid, the President of the 76th session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) and the Maldivian Minister of Foreign Affairs.

The honor was conferred to the minister during a special ceremony held in the country's capital, Guatemala City on Saturday, July 16.

The Order of Antonio Jose de Irisarri was first introduced in 1973 to honor Antonio Jose de Irisarri, the celebrated Guatemalan president and writer.

The Guatemalan Government attests the high honor conferred to Minister Shahid was in recognition of his work and commitment as the President of the UNGA.

Minister Shahid, who heads the UN General Assembly in its 76th session, is recognized for his "Presidency of Hope" which includes five instrumental objectives which include; Covid-19 pandemic recovery, rebuilding sustainably, responding to the needs of the planet and respecting the human rights of all as well as revitalization of the UN.

In addition to his work as the UNGA President, the Guatemalan high honor was conferred to the minister for his work in the foreign affairs.

The minister arrived in Guatemala on July 13, and during his visit, he had paid a courtesy call to the incumbent Guatemalan President Alejandro Giammattei.
