Human Rights Commission of Maldives (HRCM) has called to stop harassment towards presidential candidates and their respective running mates contesting in the upcoming presidential elections slated for September 2018.

In a statement released by HRCM, the commission called to stop harassment and dishonoring of presidential candidates and their running mates. The statement also urged political parties to refrain from holding campaigns or political activities that may cause civil strife in the country.

Whilst HRCM has called to stop harassment, the opposition has been criticizing Dr. Mohamed Shaheem Ali Saeed, the running mate to President Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom.

Former President Mohamed Nasheed of main opposition Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) took to Twitter to express his censure on the joint candidate to ruling Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM).

In his tweet, Nasheed claimed President Yameen’s running mate Dr. Mohamed Shaheem Ali Saeed was an alleged recruiter of the Islamic State (IS), going on to write that the Saudi Ambassador to the Maldives, Mr. Bader Ali Al-Kohail had endorses Shaheem, and that this indicated "Saudi's support for violent extremism in the Maldives".

Meanwhile, opposition parties have also been facing harassment during their campaign.

Opposition coalition presidential candidate and Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP)'s parliamentary group leader, Ibrahim Mohamed Solih, was the target of two assault attacks while in reclaimed suburb Hulhumale on Tuesday, as part of his door-to-door campaign.
