President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih said on Tuesday that depending on the results of Maldives Democratic Party's (MDP) primary election, former President Abdulla Yameen's policies may come back. This was said in reference to what could happen if his rival, former President Mohamed Nasheed, wins the primary election.

Solih is currently touring the northern atolls while campaigning for the primary election, scheduled to be held on January 28. Speaking to the people in Haa Alifu atoll Ihavandhoo, he noted that fishing is a major cornerstone of the island's economy, and that Yameen has been discussing developing an ice plant on the island.

He said that this showed that the opposition is not well aware of the reality in the northern islands because Ihavandhoo has an ice plant, which they have been using for many years now.

"It is possible that a decision we take in this primary will once again lead to the country's governance back to that reality," he said.

The President made these comments at a time when his rival for the primary election, Parliament Speaker Mohamed Nasheed has been praising how the former President Yameen governed while he was in office.

Nasheed, however, did say he would not work with Yameen if he lost the MDP primary.

President Solih said this government has carried out more projects in the past five years than any other previous administration.

He said that Yameen's rival speaks as if the difficult situation Maldives was in due to Covid-19 was not a reality and that the country had been in a normal economic state for the past five years.

He said that MDP members have to think about what vote will ensure the ongoing products will be continued.
