Over 80 people test positive for swine flu: HPA

The number of people infected by the H1N1 virus has increased to total 82, Health Protection Agency (HPA) announced late Wednesday.

According to the agency, 279 people were tested for swine flu by Wednesday out of which 82 (29 percent) tested positive.

HPA’s information revealed that 473 people have consulted at IGMH so far due to high fever, out of whom four are in poor condition and are currently receiving treatment; two of them tested positive for swine flu. ADK Hospital received 118 patients exhibiting flu symptoms on Wednesday, while 162 people went to Hulhumale Hospital and 145 to Villimale Hospital in the two suburbs.

The health agency stated that the atoll most affected by swine flu at the moment is Raa with 157 people who sought consultations for flu on Wednesday alone. In capital Male atoll there were 118 people and 114 people in Shaviyani atoll.

The total number of people in the atolls who went to hospitals with flu symptoms amounted to 1,416 on Wednesday out of whom 27 were admitted for treatment. The atoll with the highest number of admissions that day was Haa Alif with seven people.

An average of 3,000 people contract fever and the common cold per week in the Maldives. Records show that the number spiked to average 5,000 towards the end of last February onwards.

In a statement, HPA said that the total number of people with flu symptoms so far are 1,416 from the atolls and 898 from the flu clinics in capital Male. Meanwhile, there have been 45,458 cases of the common cold in the Maldives this year.
