COVID-19: Curfew lifted from greater Male' area

Health Protection Agency lifted the curfew imposed from 1700 - 2000 hrs across the greater Male' region on Thursday.

In HPA's notice, Director General of Public Health Maimoona Aboobakuru stated that the curfew, which was announced on April 2 restricting daily movement including land and sea transport in capital Male' and the suburbs Vilimale' and Hulhumale', will be officially suspended from 1700 hrs.

However, HPA banned gatherings of three or more people in the greater Male' area.

Director General Maimoona called on all service institutions and businesses, including markets, supermarkets and shops, offices and banks to make arrangements to ensure social distancing for their clients and customers.

She also urged the general public to be vigilant and conscious of social distancing measures while seeking services.

Despite the suspension of curfew, the government has decided to close all state institutions and offices, as well as educational institutions for a fourth week due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

HPA also ordered all retail outlets and stores in Male', Vilimale' and Hulhumale' to remain closed between 2300 and 0600 hrs, and prohibited dine-in services at all cafes and restaurants in the region. Eateries are further instructed to stop providing takeaway services from 0000 to 1600 hrs.

Maldives presently records a total of 19 confirmed and six active cases of COVID-19, with a total of 13 recoveries. While there are four confirmed cases of Maldivians, no local to local transmissions have been recorded.

The World Health Organization has classified the spread of COVID-19 as a global pandemic. The novel coronavirus has infected over 1,524,800 people and claimed over 88,900 lives around the world. However, out of those infected, more than 332,900 people have recovered.
