Greece has eliminated all COVID-19 requirements, including face masks and COVID certificates, in an effort to attract tourists this summer. The country stated that all summer tourism restrictions have been lifted, but that they may be reinstated in September. Until Tuesday, Greek authorities had registered 15,000 illnesses and 64 deaths. Only 72 percent of the population has been fully vaccinated so far.

Greece is expecting a large number of visitors this summer, thus the government has declared that from May 1 to August 31, visitors would not be required to provide proof of Coronavirus vaccination to enter any indoor or open place in Greece. Travellers have unrestricted access to restaurants and other public areas.

Greece is one of Europe's most popular summer vacation spots attracting millions of visitors. In 2019, the country welcomed almost 33 million visitors, the majority of which came from the United Kingdom and Germany. According to reports, the tourist industry alone accounts for nearly a fifth of the country's GDP and employs one out of every five people.

In addition, officials intend to eliminate the requirement that visitors provide an EU digital COVID-19 certificate in order to enter the country. From June 1, wearing a mask indoors will be optional.
