Newly inaugurated President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu has issued a mandate for the continuous hoisting of the Maldives national flag at all government institutions, effective Saturday, November 18.
The decision was conveyed in President Dr. Muizzu's inaugural address, emphasizing the commitment to maintaining a continuous display of the national flag.
One of Dr. Muizzu's initial decisions, immediately upon assuming presidential responsibilities, was to mandate the continuous hoisting of the national flag on a 24-hour basis.
Traditionally the national flag was raised from 6:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. daily at government institutions. However, the custom slowly waned with hoisting of the flag completely stopped in government bodies for sometime.
The custom was most aptly adopted and utilized during the former President Maumoon Abdul Gayoom's administration.
In his inaugural speech, the newly sworn-in President expressed his love for the national flag, and emphasized that the "sun will now never set on this esteemed symbol."
"O' the proud national flag of Maldives: I salute you from the bottom of my heart. I understand the meaning behind every little movement you make; your waving and your fluttering. You represent the blood of the noble martyrs who defended this nation. The hope and life of all the brave men and women who built our beloved country. The sacred beauty and faith of Islam, salvation of our beloved people," the eighth President of the Maldives said.
"O' beloved and honored national flag: from now on, the sun will never set on you. Starting today, our proud flag will be the most honorable symbol that will fly in every island of the Maldives."
