Speaker of the Parliament Mohamed Nasheed said on Wednesday that many bills are stuck in the parliamentary committees as parliamentarians are consulting the government on these bills.

Beginning the parliamentarian session on March 1, Nasheed noted that an increased number of bills are stuck in parliamentary committees.

He stated they were getting delayed because there are ongoing discussions between the MPs and the government regarding these bills, and also because the MPs are attempting to get everyone on the same page on certain matters. He requested for these bills to be done as soon as possible.

"If good efforts are made on this work before Ramadan, it will make Ramadan easier as well," he said in Dhivehi, the local language.

Committee on Economic Affairs:

- Chamber of Commerce and Industries Bill

- Company Bill

- Bill to amend the Penal Code

Nasheed also pointed out that the amendment proposed by Kaashidhoo MP Abdulla Jabir to the Assembly Act is also delayed. He requested for the work to be decided as the members see fit and send it to the Floor soon.

The issue of delayed bills within the parliamentary committees has been repeatedly raised in the past by the opposition and the Speaker, stating the committees are not functioning as they should.
