Former President Abdulla Yameen has decided to register his new party, People's National Front (PNF), under the name of his son, Zain Abdulla Yameen as the main founder.
After a meeting with the Elections Commission (EC), former Minister Mohamed Maleeh Jamal, who led the formation of PNF, said at a press conference that the EC assured them the party would be permitted to form soon after submitting the necessary documents.
Maleeh expressed hope that the criminal records of the eight individuals intending to submit their nominations as founders would be cleared soon. However, according to EC regulations, only one person can become the founder.
Therefore, they decided to submit Zain's name as the founder, and the form will be submitted once his criminal record is cleared.
Yameen is currently serving a prison sentence, and no political party can be formed in his name.
The former President left Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM) on Thursday night, citing isolation from the party's leadership under the new government.
