Police Spokesperson and Assistant Commissioner of Police Ahmed Shifan shared in a post on social media platform X that as of August, MVR 2.2 million of the money stolen through scams have been recovered.
Shifan, however, warned that many are still becoming victims to scams.
Anti-scam Center Head and Inspector of Police Mariyam Rasheed said in a meeting of the Parliament's SOE Committee in July that over 500 bank accounts have been blocked in relation to scam cases. She further said that 782 device networks, 297 SIM cards and 70 web links were blocked.
By that time, Police had sent 156 scam cases for prosecution, she said, with many currently being proceeded at court.
In 2023, 1661 scam cases were reported, involving MVR 20 million. From January to August this year, 1302 scam cases have been reported, Police said.
