Former Vice President Ahmed Adeeb, on Saturday, returned to Maldives after seeking medical care in India.

The former VP and his wife Mariyam Nashwa departed to Bangalore, India, on June 14 accompanied by a security team consisting of three officers from Maldives Correctional Services and three Police officers.

The team escorted Adeeb to his residence in the capital city of Male'.

Despite initially being scheduled to return on June 26, Corrections extended Adeeb's medical leave by a ten-day period.

Adeeb was advised to return for further consultations after a six-month period by ophthalmologist Dr Shrutika Kankariya.

After his arrival in Maldives, Adeeb tweeted assurances that he would not evade his responsibilities and that he intended to accept ongoing investigations. Additionally, Adeeb expressed his love for the country.

The former Vice-President was diagnosed with glaucoma in 2017 while under imprisonment over his alleged involvement in the corruption case of Maldives Marketing and Public Relations Corporation (MMPRC) and the blast aboard the presidential speedboat in 2015 in a plot to assassinate former President Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom.

Following the recent annulment of his sentences, Adeeb was currently acquitted of all charges, escaping a hefty 33-year jail sentence.
