Promas Private Limited, the operator of Gililankanfushi resort, was fined over MVR 500,000 on Thursday by Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) for destroying a nearby sandbank.
The management of Gililankafushi, a resort near Kaafu Hinmafushi, attempted to destroy the sandbank in January 21, 2021. EPA announced on Sunday that the agency has concluded the case by fining the company 562,980 Rufiyaa for having worked to destroy the sandbank.
EPA further stated that the fine was required to be paid within a 30 day period.
They were fined after it was proven Gililankanfushi staff attempted to destroy the sandbank by digging a waterway to ensure the sandbank does not stay intact, EPA said. Police worked to provide EPA with proof, they said.
Promas was fined a lower amount for what other parties have been in the past for accidentally harming reefs or sandbanks due to shipwrecks. Some parties have been fined millions in the past.
It was the people of Hinmafushi that notified authorities that Gililankanfushi staff were attempting to destroy the resort.
The sandbank is used by the people of Hinmafushi on day trips often.
