Ghiyasuddin International School (GIS) has announced an increase in their school fees.
According to GIS Principal Ali Musthafa, the school has been facing financial challenges since the onset of the Covid-19 pandemic. He stated that the school has been operating at a loss during this period. The principle added that increasing teachers' salaries by up to 20 percent has further contributed to the school's financial difficulties.
Musthafa stated that the school has informed parents that there will be an increase in tuition fees for the upcoming academic year. The fee increase will apply to all grade levels, with the highest increase being 5.5 percent.
Last year, GIS had also implemented an increase in their school fees. The fee for second-grade students last year saw an increase of MVR 297.
● Grade level 1-2: fees increased from MVR 3,927 to MVR 4,143
● Grades 3-7 : fees increased from MVR 3,812 to MVR 4,143
● Grades 8-10 : fees increased from MVR 5,565 to MVR 5,871
"We had to bear numerous challenges, especially the burden of financial losses and increased GST. Despite this, we have made the decision to increase the fees without attempting to compensate for the losses," Musthafa said.
According to Musthafa, due to the financial strain resulting from operating the school at a loss and incurring additional expenses during its expansion, the school made the decision to adjust the fee structure.
The Ministry of Education has granted permission to GIS to increase their fees.
Following the increase in salaries for public school teachers last year, several private schools have raised their tuition fees to accommodate the higher salaries of their teaching staff.
