Former President Mohamed Nasheed has met with the Maldivian Ambassador to Germany Jameela Ali during his current visit to Germany.

This is the first time that a top government official has met with Mohamed Nasheed after he was sentenced to jail for 13 years over the arbitrary detention of a judge during his presidency.

In a tweet posted by lawmaker of Henveiru constituency and former Parliament Speaker Abdulla Shahid, who is also a member of Nasheed’s delegation, he cited Ambassador Jameela stated that Germany is very concerned over the political situation of the Maldives.

Germany is one of the nations that have expressed most concern over the political turmoil in the archipelago and has notably released statements with regard to each major event.

The most recent statement released on April 7 declared that the current state of democracy in the Maldives obstructs stable economic development.

The delegation of top officials from opposition parties is visiting Germany to meet German diplomats, parliament members and civil institutions.

According to main opposition Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP), the delegation comprises of convicted Former President Mohamed Nasheed, Henveiru North MP Abdulla Shahid, MDP’s National Council member Umar Abdul Razza, Jumhoory Party’s deputy leader Ameen Ibrahim and Dr Asim Ahmed, former Minister of Defence Mohamed Nazim’s brother Adam Azim, and council member Aminath Nadhira appointed by Former President Maumoon Abdul Gayoom’s faction of the divided ruling Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM).
