State Electric Company (STELCO) signs on to manage the street lights of Alif Alif and Alif Dhaal atolls.

The utility provider is taking over management of lamps and street lights in islands where STELCO already provides electricity services.

STELCO signed agreements with the islands in Alif Dhaal atoll the utility provides power services to, and all the islands coming under the constituency of Alif Alif Mathiveri. The utility provider is expected to commence repairs of street lights in a total of 14 local islands and retain as a the exclusive maintenance service provider.

A week earlier, STELCO signed on to install street lights in Alif Alif atoll Ukulhas, Thoddoo and Rasdhoo as part of the utility provider's pilot project.

The project comes as a direct initiative by STELCO Managing Director Ahmed Shareef, who announced it during the Viavathi Raajje conference held recently.

Shareef identified lack of technical support, staff and maintenance supervision owing to staff shortcomings at local councils. STELCO stepped in to resolve the issue and relief councils from constant maintenance of utility components in residential islands.

Shareef assured the utility provider will ensure street lights remain lit constantly without interruptions during night. Speaking about the initiative, Shareef praised the highly trained professionals employed at various STELCO stations.

STELCO is expected to cover the expenses of replacing old lamp posts and lights in accordance with discussions with respective island councils.

The utility provider's MD announced similar prospective projects set for both Kaafu and Vaavu atoll in October.
